Here comes the hot Texas weather! The change of seasons from Spring to Summer brings with it the need to organize closets in the house, garages, attics, and more. Look at all those items taking up valuable space in your home and garage: out-of-season clothing like sweaters, coats, and just generally unused items during summer months. Perhaps you have a college student home for the summer, and along for the ride home was a trailer full of items that once were in the dorm room.
Statistics show Summer is the most popular time of the year for people moving to a new home or office space. According to a CultureMap Dallas story, despite the inescapable heat, the summer season is one of the most popular times of year for Texans to pack up and move to a new house.

We can make your summer storage easy with this helpful tips:
Storage Unit Size
Are you storing items from a dorm room, a closet, or from the garage? We have all size storage units available that will fit your need. AND, we offer climate-controlled units that are ideal for our hot weather climate in north Texas. If you have items that might be damaged by excessive heat, a climate-controlled unit is recommended for the summer months. When renting a storage unit over the summer, be sure your belongings won’t be damaged by the heat. Heat and humidity can be very damaging, and this is why you may want a storage unit with climate control. A climate-controlled storage unit keeps temperature and humidity levels in a safe range so that your belongings can stay cool all summer long.
Purge Before Using Storage:
This is a good time to go through all the Fall, Winter, and Spring clothing you have and purge items you no longer wear or ones that don’t fit. This will be especially helpful for college students who will be returning to campus in the Fall and also for families that might be relocating during the summer. Get a head start before the move by discarding out of season items before putting in storage.
Packing Tips For Storage:
One of the most important things to consider for long term summer storage is the boxes and materials used for packing items. We recommend using new sturdy boxes. Consider how you wrap large items being placed in storage units. Plastic is not the best for this sort of protection. Draping furniture and other large items with light colored fabric sheets allows for air flow and prevents from color bleed on to the surface of the item over time. Carefully wrap dishes and breakable items in paper with sufficient filler between the pieces. If you are placing school textbooks or any sort of books in summer storage, be sure to store books horizontally in boxes and not on their spines.
Cleaning:
If your college student has brought home a mini fridge and other appliances to be stored over the summer, be sure to prep those items properly. Prop the door open to the min fridge for air flow. All other appliances should be cleaned thoroughly. Polish any wood furniture being stored to help seal them over the summer.
Storing Clothes:
When you place your winter clothes in storage for long period of time, be sure to do some prep work before boxing up your items. It is helpful to check all pockets and empty out any items found. Washing or even dry-cleaning clothes is a good idea prior to storage. To save space and for overall storage performance of clothes, it is advisable to fold clothes to put in boxes as opposed to hanging the items.
Storing Special Materials:
Leather shoes, purses, and jackets should be cleaned and rubbed with conditioning oil to prevent drying and cracking. Fur needs to stay cool, so climate-controlled is best, whenever possible. Wool should be professionally dry cleaned and stored in a breathable garment bag or box. Also with wool, it’s best to use cedar blocks instead of mothballs to keep away moths and insects. Cotton, rayon, and synthetics should be cleaned and folded in breathable garment bags or boxes.
