CLEAN THE FURNITURE BEFORE STORING
By cleaning the furniture pieces, you will significantly reduce the chance of mold and dust developing over time. You can clean plastic furniture pieces with mild soap and water, and for wooden furniture, it is suggested to use a wood cleaner to help protect the wood finish. The benefit of cleaning your furniture before putting in storage is the process helps prevent stains forming from dust and other residue left on the surfaces and can help prevent mildew and rust from forming. Sofa and chair cloth cushions should be cleaned with fabric or upholstery cleaning spray.
HOW TO PROPERLY STORE FURNITURE – WRAP IT!
If you plan to store your furniture for a long period of time, it is advisable to cover the items. This will help protect from dust collecting and stains forming over time. It is important to remember NOT to wrap furniture with coverings that will trap moisture. This could damage the item, as the condensation could cause mold and cracks. The preferred covering for wood, upholstery, and metal furniture is something that will allow some air circulation but still protect the surface. Furniture dop cloths, blankets, bed sheets, etc., are acceptable coverings for furniture in storage. Place the covering loosely around the furniture to allow for air circulation.
HOW TO PROPERLY STORE FURNITURE WITH GLASS
Some furniture with glass tops, such as coffee tables, end tables, dining tables and mirrors need to have special precaution with wrapping for storage. The first step is to wrap the piece in packing paper, but be sure to not tape the paper directly to the glass. Then, cover each piece in bubble wrap, or you can place the wrapped piece in a box for additional protection. Store the wrapped pieces carefully in the storage unit and do not place other items on top of it.
RAISE FURNITURE OFF FLOOR
It is always a good idea, if possible, to elevate the furniture piece off the floor. This helps allow for air ventilation and just added protection from any moisture that might form on the floor. You can use pallets, cinder blocks, or wooden blocks to raise the piece. Even some cardboard or a drop cloth is ideal for using as a barrier to raise the furniture.
DON’T STORE FURNISH TOO CLOSE TOGETHER
Be sure to give each piece of furniture some room between the other stored items. Cramming furniture in tightly in storage increases the risk of damaging or breaking pieces. Take time when placing the items in the storage unit to organize how the furniture will safely and securely sit in place. Leave 2-3 inches of free space on each side of the furniture item. And, be sure to not over stack items that could lead to furniture falling of breaking due to weight and instability.
